Why don’t I seem to be getting any darker? Have I reached a plateau?

Each of us has more or less the same amount of melanocytes in our skin however hereditary determines how much of a tan we can produce. Tanning takes place in the epidermis, or top layer of the skin so there are ways to break through the plateau and keep your tan longer.

When should I shower?

Showering, grooming, and shaving just before tanning clears the skin of dirt and dead skin cells that would filter UV penetration. The heat from the shower or bath opens the pores, causing the skin to take in more of the oxygen vital to tanning. Applying a tanning lotion right after taking a shower or bath will help the lotion to absorb
more readily into the skin and prepare it for the tan.

Showering a few hours after tanning is also acceptable but will minimize the total impact of your tanning session.
